Nowadays, it is more common to see people working from laptops then on desktop computers. While laptops are extremely convenient, they are absolute nightmares when it comes to office ergonomics. Here’s why:
- Small screen: A laptop screen is much smaller than a regular monitor and is in a fixed position. In proper office ergonomics, the screen and keyboard are spaced further apart. The positioning of laptops causes bad posture and can lead to big issues later on.
- Keyboard spacing: A laptop's keyboard is much smaller and cramped, which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Small pointers: The integrated touchpad on laptops is not built for extended use.
- Laptop cases: Carrying your computer from place to place in a laptop case puts extreme strain on your shoulders and neck.
While we understand that swearing off your laptop probably isn't an option, here are 6 proper laptop ergonomics that you can implement immediately to prevent any future problems.
- The basis of laptop ergonomics is to create a desktop-like model. Place your laptop on some sturdy books or an adjustable platform until the screen is at eye level. This will prevent eyestrain and keep your neck in a neutral position.
- Attach an external keyboard and mouse with a USB to keep your hands and wrist neutral. You can use a keyboard tray to ensure that the keyboard is in a proper office ergonomics position.
- Don't have an external keyboard? No worries! Grab a 3-ring binder and place it under the laptop. This slight angle will place your wrists back into a strong, neutral position that will lower the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and prevent forearm strain.
- Proper office ergonomics call for a footrest in order to reduce strain on your back. A footrest will keep your legs relaxed if the chair is at an increased height.
- Instead of a laptop case, invest in a wide-strapped laptop backpack that will rest on your shoulders and properly sustain the weight of your "portable office."
- Stand up and stretch every 30-45 minutes.
