“Vacations concentrating on wellness are compelling because everyday commitments create obstacles for people to do what they would like to do for their health." - Dave Aidekman
Are you planning a getaway? While vacations were originally designed to relax and recharge, many people are coming back exhausted, five pounds heavier and in need of another unplugged getaway. It kind of defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it? Thanks to the Internet and pure creativity, however, people of all ages (specifically baby boomers) are approaching a getaway differently. Instead of it being about an overload of activities, large portions of food and sleep deprivation, baby boomers are planning vacations that are centered around wellness.
In the 2013 Global Wellness Tourism Report, wellness vacations tipped the scales at a half trillion dollar market, representing 14% of the total global tourism revenue ($3.2 trillion overall). In the next five years, wellness tourism is expected to reach $678.5 billion. Why is this kind of tourism growing so much?
Answer: Wellness is more than a trip to the spa.
Baby boomers are beginning to take full advantage of that fact that life is meant to last longer, but that doesn't mean there is an eternity of life left. Wellness retreats that feature health-promoting environments are what draw the crowds of middle-aged, wanderlust adults. This kind of getaway is also just plain healthy and good for the mind, soul and body. If you are part of the baby boomer generation, or even if you're not, we've put together a list of tips to promote your health and really give you the relaxation and recharge that you need during your next vacation.
3 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE A GREAT WELLNESS VACATION
1. Look for the holistic approach.
Try to find a place that promotes holistic practices such as hiking, yoga, meditation, healthy eating and positive energy. Spiritual wellness is just as important as mental and physical wellness and will go a long way in keeping you focused when you return.
2. Be with nature.
A great way to truly recharge is to leave all your electronics dead and at home. Make it a point to immerse yourself in nature and participate in activities that require you to exercise and “be one with nature.” Try activities like kayaking, hiking, swimming or biking up in the mountains.
3. Don’t ignore the spas.
Getting a massage, facial or body wrap is extremely refreshing and can help de-stress the mind and body. If you want to indulge, do it and feel beautiful! A little confidence might be exactly what you need.
