The 4th of July weekend is over and summer vacation season is officially here. It's time to indulge in relaxation, fun and new adventures.
But for those of you on a strict diet or extreme fitness regimen, you may have trouble with the word ‘indulge.’ After all, it was the act of indulging that possibly led to you making some serious lifestyle changes. While we commend you for choosing to change your life for the better, in no way should you miss out on a fulfilling vacation packed with indulging activities.
5 Ways to Indulge (and Stay Healthy) on Vacation
1. Resist the urge to splurge.
You're on vacation, and for many of us, going out to eat and consuming a ridiculous amount of calories can be excused as a vacation splurge. But is it really worth it? Instead of ordering a huge entree with delicious sides and a margarita, split the meal with a friend, order the half-size or put some in a box for the next day. You can still indulge in a unique and exotic meal if you portion correctly.
2. Walk as much as possible.
The point of vacation is to slow down, relax and appreciate your new surroundings. If you're driving everywhere, you might not get the chance to really admire the nature around you. Splurge on some amazing walking shoes (and walking poles) and do activities at a slightly slower pace.
3. One treat a day.
You can't go to Paris and not have crepes. You can't go to New York without trying a hot dog. But you can have just one. Be kind to yourself and allow your body one scrumptious treat a day that is unique to wherever you are.
4. Try a new exercise.
You never know how you feel about something until you try it. Instead of spending tons of money on an expensive dinner, splurge instead on a fitness activity that you haven't tried before. Take a belly-dancing class, go on an eco-bike and hike, try water skiing or rock climbing. These experiences will last much longer than a big meal and you might discover a new hobby!
5. Be choosy about booze.
With poolside service and elegant wine-and-cheese plates, it can be easy to drink several calories. Instead of margaritas, Piña Coladas and fruity cocktails, stick with simple drinks like a gin and tonic.
